IAOK @ Taste of Asia

The annual Taste Of Asia event was organized by Asia Society on August the 6th, 2011, from 5:30 to 9:00 PM  at the Mayfair Church; 2340 NW 50th Street, OKC, OK. 73132 and was attended by over 300 members and guests of the society.  This is the largest food event of Asian cuisine in Oklahoma and is well represented by mostly all countries from Asia region.  This year nine countries were present with delicious food samplers. India Association of Oklahoma (IAOK) participated with mouth- watering Indian culinary delicacies. IAOK was represented at the event by Mike Lulla, Rakesh Prasad, and Mike’s daughter Julie.

Mike and Julie promptly set up the Indian dishes at 4:30pm and served the guests non-stop till the food got over. Taj Indian Restaurant’s proprietor Mr. Mani and his wife Santha did an excellent job of preparing vegetarian Samosas, Kabobs and Chicken 65 for the event.  Apparently Samosa’s have carried their popularity across the ocean and were the first choice of the guests, whereas Kabobs and Chicken-65 fared second and third in popularity. Mike and Julie heard nothing but great comments about the food.  All in all, it was a great event and the India Association shall continue to participate each year.  The association would like to thank Mike Lulla for his initiative and hard work.

The quest never ends; therefore as a true representative of Indian culture Shekhar is proceeding ahead in search of new horizons.

About the Mono-Act play Kabeer : “Kabeer” This musical mono act play depicts exciting life story of great reformist, poet and philosopher “Kabeer”. 600 years ago, this legendary saint challenged deep-rooted social evils ailing the society. With 45 song sequences, this two hour long play unfolds making of this revolutionary social reformer who was discovered floating in a pond, on his day of birth, by a Muslim couple Neeru & Nima. He grew in ancient holy city – Kashi amidst temples and mosques, only to discover deeply entrenched superstition propagated by religious leaders and priests. Play truly reflects influence of great saints like Guru Ramanand, Raidas, and Sheikh Fareed on Kabeer. Touching enactment of Kabeer’s marriage with Loyee, meeting with Sikandar Shah Lodhi and other incidences underlines Shekhar’s sterling performance. Sung in rich voice and supported by melodious music Kabeer’s poems, appropriately woven in the play, tenderly touch our soul. Mesmerized audience rediscovers Kabeer’s message of love and peace & religious harmony, a message that binds us together shedding religious hatred. “Kabeer” has been conceived, written, composed, directed and acted by Shekhar Sen – a renowned singer and music director credited with more than 1000 live performances and over 188 cassettes and CDs. 244 shows of “Kabeer” have been grand success in Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Surat, Kolkata, Indore, Ujjain, Varanasi, Lucknow, London, Antwerp, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Fransisco, New York, Dallas, Boston, Phoenix, San Antonio, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Detroit, Dayton, Houston, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Singapore and Suriname. These plays were not only appreciated in abroad & elite circles of Metros but Shekhar Sen took KABEER to small villages like Ayodhya, Kopa gunj, Maunath bhanjan, Salempur, Devaria, Basti, Gajipur, Ajamgarh, Kushi Nagar, Magahar, Balia, Balia, Mirzapur, Jaunpur, Rauzagaon, etc. where each show draw an average crowd of 10-15000 people.
